That's the bell tower on the left and the "door to nowhere" on the right. Actually not to nowhere, it simply is awaiting the construction of the addition it was supposed to connnect to.
Sarah Winchester was an interesting lady, she did the designing of the mansion, and it is not a mad mishmash. Parts were intended to be confusing to the spirits, and knowing that fact makes many of the seeming oddities quite logical.
We have been wanting to visit for a few years, but Wendy's job was putting a crimp in that. We would have had to leave after work, motel one night, see the Winchester House and hit the road so she would only miss one day. Her new job has a lot more leaway so she booked us for two nights at a Best Western. We drove up Tuesday, spent all day yesterday being tourists, and get to drive home today after a good night's rest. My camera didn't do too good on the interior, I left a piece of tape over the flash that avoids over exposures on closeups -- so all my interior shots were 'way underexposed. Check Wendy's B log for the full story.
